Christian woke mindvirust spread fast among the weaklings, who are numerious. Christians used unmanly tactics to win, like the Assassination of Julian. Christianity is not paganized, but many people just ignored it's teaching and practiced pagan rituals. in doctrine it's not pagan at all and popes always loved kissing refugee feet, the pope also put all templars to death for political reasons.

The Pope at the time was practically a French puppet (Avignon Papacy) and had no real choice on the matter, just signed it.
