Pulgasari is a North Korean fantasy-action film released in 1985. Set in feudal Korea, the story revolves around a humble blacksmith named Ami who leads a group of oppressed peasants in a revolt against their tyrannical ruler. When the blacksmith is imprisoned, his daughter, a young girl named Sori, discovers a tiny monster made of rice named Pulgasari. Believing in its magical powers, Sori releases the creature and nurtures it until it grows into a gigantic iron-eating monster. Pulgasari gained international attention not only for its unique story but also due to the circumstances surrounding its production. The film was produced by Shin Sang-ok, a South Korean filmmaker who was famously kidnapped by North Korean agents in 1978 and forced to work on films in the country.
