One of the earliest known depictions of Jesus Christ is a piece of Roman graffiti dated to around the 3rd century AD, discovered in a wall on the Palatine Hill, Rome. It shows a human figure with the head of a donkey attached to a cross, with a second figure raising a hand in a gesture of worship, and a Greek inscription which translates to "Alexamenos worships his God". Most historians interpret it as a mockery of Christianity, meant to mock a Christian named Alexamenos. At the time, Romans often accused Christians of onolatry, the worship of donkeys, a slur intended to portray their faith as ridiculous.
