The Great Mosque of Djenné
Considered one of the most famous landmarks in Africa. I always thought the recognizable structure we can see today stood there since medieval times, when Islam expanded into west Africa and what is now Mali. But it turns out that, while the original mosque does date from around the 13th century, it was damaged, destroyed and rebuilt several times during its history, and by the time France conquered the region during the Scramble for Africa it was in a state of complete decay and disrepair. The structure we see today is actually barely 100 years old, it was reconstructed in the early 20th century, sponsored by the French colonial authorities.
